What is the Forty & Eight
La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux is an independent fraternal organization of U. S. Veterans, more commonly known as the Forty & Eight.
The Forty & Eight was formed in 1920 by American Legionnaires as an honor society, and it is committed to charitable aims. Membership is by invitation for members of the American Legion who have shown exemplary service. All Forty & Eight members are veterans of congressionally recognized wartime periods via their Legion membership.
The Forty & Eight’s titles and symbols reflect its First World War origins. American servicemen in France were transported to the battle front on narrow gauge French railroads (Chemin de Fer) inside boxcars (Voitures) that were half the size of American boxcars. Each French boxcar was stenciled with a “40/8”, denoting its capacity to hold either forty men or eight horses. This uncomfortable mode of transportation was familiar to all who traveled from the coast to the trenches; a common small misery among American soldiers who thereafter found “40/8” a lighthearted symbol of the deeper service, sacrifice and unspoken horrors of war that truly bind those who have borne the battle.
Goose Creek Voiture 1067 conducts their Promenades at American Legion Post 166 in Goose Creek, South Carolina. The Post is located at 116 Howe Hall Road just off of Red Bank Road. The forty & Eight Promanade and the La Femmes Rendezvous are held on the 4th Tuesday of every month at 7:30 PM.
We are a fun loving group that is dedicated to furthering the American Legion's principles and helping the orphaned and widowed. There are many charities that are near and dear to our hearts. Please follow the link to Charities for more info.

What are the La Femme
We are a Fraternal Organization composed of female members from the family of a Voyageur of La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux. We hold our own independent Charter and Constitution. Therefore we are not considered an auxiliary of the 40/8. Membership is by invitation only. We do not have our own programs. We sponsor and support the programs of the 40/8.
